{\'a}ridas, semi{\'a}ridas e sub{\'u}midas do mundo. A baixa
precipita{\c{c}}{\~a}o e a concentra{\c{c}}{\~a}o das chuvas

regi{\~a}o apresenta s{\'e}rios problemas associados {\`a}
desertifica{\c{c}}{\~a}o.
variabilidade clim{\'a}tica interanual, associada principalmente

bastante suscept{\'{\i}}vel {\`a}s mudan{\c{c}}as no uso da

avalia{\c{c}}{\~o}es e crit{\'e}rios interdisciplinares
zonas vulner{\'a}veis e auxiliar nos programas de combate {\`a}
desertifica{\c{c}}{\~a}o.
poss{\'{\i}}veis mudan{\c{c}}as nesses mecanismos a partir de
proje{\c{c}}{\~o}es clim{\'a}ticas futuras.
Coquimbo e sua associa{\c{c}}{\~a}o {\`a}
degrada{\c{c}}{\~a}o da terra na regi{\~a}o, al{\'e}m de
pesquisar poss{\'{\i}}veis mudan{\c{c}}as futuras. As
an{\'a}lises foram realizadas nos per{\'{\i}}odos 1980-1999 e
2000-2016 para o presente; e 2020-2044 e 2070-2094 sob
cen{\'a}rios clim{\'a}ticos futuros.
vegeta{\c{c}}{\~a}o.
simula{\c{c}}{\~o}es do modelo regional RegCM4.
modelo SIMPRAD. No primeiro per{\'{\i}}odo, o ac{\'u}mulo
J{\'a} no segundo per{\'{\i}}odo, a
decl{\'{\i}}nio em julho, provavelmente associado {\`a} queda
per{\'{\i}}odo de an{\'a}lise.
temperaturas m{\'e}dias e m{\'{\i}}nimas. Os resultados da
aplica{\c{c}}{\~a}o do m{\'e}todo RESTREND mostram grande parte
ABSTRACT: The desertification is the soil degradation process the
lost of vegetation and which affect the semi-arid and sub-humid
areas in the world. The low precipitation and its concentration in
few months of the year, associated to the land use dynamics, favor
the lost of vegetation and the water and wind erosion, which are
the mechanisms that causes desertification. The pasture in dry
land in Chile is central to the subsistence of agricultural
communities that have part of their sustenance based in the
grazing goats. This area presents serious problems related to the
desertification. The region is characterized by a rainfall regime
that is concentrated in a few months, with long dry periods in the
year, and also with a high climatic variability, as consequence of
the El Niņo, Oscila{\c{c}}{\~a}o do Sul. Besides, the area has
been over explored by human activity, as agriculture and
livestock. The desertification is a complex process which evolve
social and environmental criteria, besides being quite susceptible
to land use and climate changes. For these reasons, it needs
interdisciplinary assessments and criteria for a better
understanding of the problem, in order to be able to contribute to
improve the indicators, determine the vulnerable zones and help
with programs to combat desertification. The objective of this
thesis was to contribute with the knowledge of some mechanisms
associated with factors that influence desertification processes
in Chile's dry land pastures, and the possible changes in these
mechanisms in the future climate projections. To achieve this
goal, the seasonal and interanual variability of climate variables
can affect the biomass in the Coquimbo Region, in Chile, and how
it can be associated to its degradation, and also evaluate
possible changes that may happen in the future. The analysis was
made using two different periods: 1980- 1999 and 2000-2016 to the
present and 2020-2044 and 2070-2094 to the future projections. The
biomass was simulated using the SIMPRAD model, with basis on the
climate and physiological characteristics of vegetation
information. The meteorological data was obtained from observation
in the present and from projections using the RegCM4 model to the
future. The NDVI and land cover map was also used in the
evaluations. To the present, the annual distribution of
precipitation presents a distinct behavior in the two periods,
which changes the total biomass distribution during the year. In
the first period, the biomass maximum occurs in July, while in the
second period the biomass start growing earlier and presents a
reduction in July, probably related to the low temperature, common
at this time of the year, together with a reduction in the
precipitation in this month to the second period. In the future
projections, the precipitation maximum still in June, but the
accumulated biomass maximum change between periods, probably due
to changes in the precipitation distribution in the year and in
others variables, as minimum and mean temperature. The results
using the RESTREND method show a large area of Coquimbo with
potential degradation, independent of the precipitation. If
included, the precipitation changes could aggravate the
desertification in the region. Thus, changes in the rainfall are
important, not only in quantity, but also in how this quantity is
distributed in the year, affecting the biomass production in a
location that shows to be vulnerable from both a climatic and
socioeconomic point of view. Changes in the land cover can also
intensify the degradation in this area.",
